Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is a DJ Training Tool

by Bryan Sharp on November 3, 2009

I wasn’t aware that another company was making a DJ video game. I thought DJ Hero had a lock on that dubiously profitable market. Imagine my surprise when I learned about Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, a game that raises the question — would you rather be a hero in the DJ community or the ultimate DJ.

After watching the following video featuring Mix Master Mike talking about the Scratch DJ controller, I don’t want to be involved in DJ video game community in any shape or form. Mix Master Mike actually describes himself as the “serial wax killer.” Serial killers usually have a certain type of victim, so I wonder which type of record Mike gets off on killing.

“Don’t struggle, baby. I knew you were a Prince album the minute I smelled you out of your sleeve. Hold on while I unzip.”

My favorite part of this video is when the lady talking about the wondrous Numark Scratch controller claims that “with Scratch you can build skills that will transfer over to any DJ setup.”

That’s a pretty bold claim. I didn’t get any better at guitar by playing Guitar Hero. Now I just suck at both plastic and real guitar. I didn’t realize that Scratch: The Ultimate DJ was a type of training tool. It’s the Brain Age of DJ video games. That DJ Hero game is all about fun and entertainment. Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is about strapping some weights to your scrawny hands and hitting that plastic table day in and day out until you build up enough confidence to hit the club scene. I hear that clubs will provide a TV and copy of Scratch: The Ultimate DJ to all new hires.

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ should be out in Q1 of next year. Are there any inspiring DJs out there ready to put in the money, effort, and time in order to become the ultimate DJ? No? Are there any people out there who want to have fun playing a DJ video game? Yes? Get the fuck out of here. Scratch: The Ultimate DJ is only for winners.
