PC Gamers Boycotting Modern Warfare 2 Sure Stuck to Their Guns

by Bryan Sharp on November 12, 2009

Does anyone remember a time before the Internet when if you said you stood for something, you actually stood for that something?  That was nice, wasn’t it? I think that’s how the Boston Tea Party got off the ground.

These days, standing for something on the Internet doesn’t really hold that much weight. For example, a screenshot recently surfaced showing a bunch of members from the “BOYCOTT MODERN WARFARE 2 (WE WANT DEDICATED SERVERS)” Steam group playing Modern Warfare 2.

I’m pretty disheartened by these people lessening the weight of my voice as a PC gamer, but I think I’m more disheartened that they weren’t smart enough to leave the fucking boycott group before purchasing Modern Warfare 2.

Maybe they don’t even know what boycott means. Maybe they thought it was a gaming term like “fanboy” or “cover mechanic.” BOYCOTT MEANS YOU DON’T BUY THE GAME. “Boycott” is related to the word “recall.” Both involve not purchasing something because it’s bad. When people show me that they don’t know what boycott means, I always expect them to be the first ones shitting out chunks of their intestines the next time there’s a spinach scare.

It’s refreshing to watch Infinity Ward treat the gaming community like a bunch of fickle idiots who will swallow any mass of pixels that a triple A development team releases, and then watch it happen. Bravo, PC gamers. I’d salute you if I could stop my hands from gripping an invisible version of your collective throats.
