Netflix Adds the PS3 to its Queue

by Bryan Sharp on October 26, 2009

Clever title, huh? I try to go with a clever title when I can’t fit in a reference to dinosaurs. Actually, I probably could have fit a dinosaur reference in up there, but not many people frequent dino-porn websites enough to understand the use of “T-Rex” as a verb.

Do you have a PS3?  Do you have a Netflix subscription? Have you always wanted to watch Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild at a moment’s notice? I hear Stuart reverts back to his animal instincts in that film. There’s a controversial scene where he gnaws a little kid’s finger off after the kid tries to dress him in a new pair of slacks.

If you answered “yes” to those questions, especially the one about the cartoon mouse, you’re in luck. Netflix is launching PS3 compatibility by the end of the year. The Netflix compatibility won’t be built right into the PS3 interface as it is on the Xbox 360. Instead, Netflix will provide customers with a special Blu-ray disc to access the software needed to stream Wall-E at four in the morning; which, in my opinion, is the only time the brain is sufficiently sleep-deprived to enjoy Wall-E.

It’s important to note that the streaming quality won’t match the quality of a Blu-ray, but some titles are currently available to stream in 720.

I was hoping Netflix would add PS3 support. My Netflix plan let’s me rent two movies at a time, but there are times when both titles are in the mail or finished and I want to watch something that isn’t on Comcast’s OnDemand free movie list; My girlfriend refuses to watch Ronin even though I told her “ronin” is the Japanese word for romance. The plot I wove for her involves Robert De Niro’s character opening a flower shop in Japan and falling in love with Jean Reno’s character. Talk about a movie full of gun play!

This is also great for movies or shows that you see on Netflix but have serious doubts about their quality. Take, for example, Jakob the Liar starring Robin Williams and a wool hat. Now, I like Robin Williams. I like wool hats. I like liars when they get shot in movies. But I’m not sure that Jakob the Liar is really a movie worth one of my precious physical Netflix rentals. With this new streaming service, I can just flip Jakob on and then flip it right back off if it looks anything like a Nazi version of One Hour Photo.

I recommend that everyone with a PlayStation 3 and a Netflix membership surf over to netflix.com/ps3 and demand that Netflix sends the special Blu-ray streaming disc whatever as soon as it is available.

Great news. You say that Blu-Ray titles aren’t available for streaming but technically there are a number of titles available for HD streaming, and they look great!

Hey r4 ds,

Thanks for your comment. The thing about Netflix’s HD streaming is that it only goes up to 720, so if a 1080 capable TV is involved, a physical Blu-ray disc is the better choice.

And that extra resolution comes in handy sometimes, like if you’re trying to see if Elijah Wood has facial hair or not.

Thanks for your comment and keep reading Gamebane.
