Infinity Ward Twists the Knife in Developer Chat

by Bryan Sharp on November 4, 2009

Infinity Ward, fresh off failing to address any of the problems that the PC audience has with the announced features of Modern Warfare 2, decided to field questions from users in a developer chat hosted by Best Buy. After dodging questions a few times like they were running for State Assembly, Infinity Ward finally addressed some of the concerns.

Unfortunately, instead of helping people understand Infinity Ward’s position on no dedicated server support, the members of the Modern Warfare 2 development team used the chat to break some more bad news. The resulting chat was like watching Bill Clinton dance around questions before finally admitting to having sex with Monica Lewinsky and then mentioning that he also sold a couple pages from the Constitution for crack.

Maybe I’m being a little dramatic — no one would take pages from the Constitution as payment for crack. Though, that Constitution paper would probably roll a pretty smooth joint. I think I just described Osama Bin Laden’s favorite wet dream.

I should provide a summary of all the pain that Infinity Ward dropped during the Best Buy chat:

  • no console command window
  • no modding
  • no dedicated servers
  • no ability to select who hosts the game
  • no kicking players from a game
  • no games bigger than 9v9
  • no idea if the PC DLC will be free

A lot of people already assumed that a couple of those things were the case, (no modding, no dedicated servers, no idea how much they’re going to re-rape the PC community for with DLC) but the max of 18 players, no way to select who hosts the game, and the inability to kick players are things that even the most pessimistic users didn’t anticipate.

My favorite part of the chat was when Infinity Ward addressed a question about the dedicated server petition:

Vince, there are 178,000 voices that say you need dedicated servers for the PC.  COD4 is the bigest online game in history!  Why in the world would you take away dedicated servers and change the whole MP experience for us?  And Mackey, the PC version with dedicated servers is already the best experience the way it is!

Vince-IW
All I can say is that we changed it to make it a better and easier experience. Also, not all of the names on that list are legit. ;)

Mackey-IW
402 signed it 4 times I heard.

Oh, Infinity Ward. You couldn’t just answer with “Look, guys. We think IWNET provides a superior multiplayer experience, and we think that everyone should play the multiplayer demo we’re releasing for a limited time to help everyone see how great it is.”

Actually, that wouldn’t work because Infinity Ward doesn’t have a demo ready, so PC gamers are expected to drop sixty dollars on a game that seriously concerns over 180,000 people. Now everyone has to ask themselves if a promise from Infinity Ward is worth sixty dollars.

Vince really shows his PR skills up there with his “Also, not all of the names on that list are legit ;) ” I’m still in disbelief that he used a fucking winky face. I haven’t seen that shit since that “girl” on AIM promised me she wasn’t a man. It would have been helpful if Vince had provided a figure here. How many names aren’t legit, Vince? Is this your first time on the Internet?

Mackey tries to help him out with “402 signed it 4 times I heard” comment, effectively turning the conversation into an argument on a school playground by a swingset. I can almost see Mackey scampering up Vince’s torso, perching himself on Vince’s shoulder, and chirping out that statement.

Hold on one second while I attempt multiplication — 402 x 4 = 1,608. Now, let’s take that number and subtract it from the 180,000 names on the petition. 180,000 – 1,608 = SHUT THE FUCK UP MACKEY.

The worst part about this entire situation is that even with this mishandling of Modern Warfare 2 PR, the game is still going to sell enough copies to choke a blue whale. Are you going to buy it? Are you going to help KILL a beautiful blue whale?

Thanks for your comment, Norbert.

I’m just glad that other developers like Valve continue to support the PC community. Honestly, I’ll be too busy shooting zombies in a couple weeks to bother with MW2 anyway.

The worst part about the Modern Warfare 2 situation is how much Infinity Ward has forgotten their PC roots. Even if IWNET turns out great and everyone is happy in the end, it will be hard to forget Infinity Ward’s attitude toward the PC community.

Actually, I’m sure Infinity Ward will be able to forget it rather easily while they try to calculate all the decimal points for their annual profit meeting.
