In the Future, We can Buy DLC at GameStop Kiosks

by Bryan Sharp on November 12, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of browsing through downloadable content from the comfort of my couch. It just seems so 2009. Thankfully, in 2010 I’ll be able to browse through DLC at a GameStop store while being asked over ten times if I want to preorder Assassin’s Creed 3: New York Assassin.

This is extra special news for me because there’s a Subway right next to my local GameStop, and the Subway food aroma leaks through the wall. If I browse DLC long enough, there’s a good chance I’ll leave smelling like a combination of used games and roasted meat. If my girlfriend likes the smell, I can finally stop bidding on bottles of that Burget King FLAME cologne on ebay.

I was just kidding about that Burget King FLAME cologne — my girlfriend’s a vegan who finds both me and meat repulsive. I’ve started to suspect that she’s just using me for my Netflix subscription.

Anywho, Joystiq is reporting that GameStop’s plan to protect their crates of money from digital distribution involves installing kiosks that let people buy DLC right in the store. This doesn’t seem like the best strategy considering that people can already do this from home and that DLC isn’t usually released with the game because that would be a slap in the face that not even gamers could ignore.

Maybe GameStop knows something about the future of DLC that we don’t. Maybe in 2010 we’ll pay sixty dollars for a copy of the game, but then we’ll have to pay another twenty dollars to unlock a missing word in the game’s title, the menu screen, auto save feature, multiplayer mode, and main character. The game is still technically playable if the gamer chooses not to purchase the DLC, but no one wants to play Left 4 BLANK 3 by controlling a floating gun.
