Get your code books out and warm up those hot pockets — it’s going to be a long night. Wait. Never mind. Someone already hacked the Left 4 Dead 2 demo so we can play Versus Mode. Put that hot pocket away. Put it away before I have to slap it out of your hand.
Valve is very talented when it comes to giving us just a little nibble of the apple before throwing the apple on the ground and then kicking dirt all over it. The newly released Left 4 Dead 2 demo is Valve’s latest apple, the tiny nibble we get is two chapters of The Parish campaign, and the dirt is the advertisement for the full game that Valve rolls over loud guitar after the second chapter ends.
The demo doesn’t include versus mode, scavenge mode, or realism mode. When those two chapters of The Parish are done, the demo is done. Thankfully, someone with more than my rudimentary Visual BASIC skills was able to solve this problem.
Left 4 Dead Mods has a download link for a plugin that allows players to unlock versus mode in the Left 4 Dead 2 demo. The plugin is only required if you want to host a game of versus. People who want to join your game just need to enter in a couple lines of code.
The plugin doesn’t look like it opens a entirely flawless versus mode as players need to enter commands to switch to the infected side and then spawn as infected. But it looks like a fun thing to fool around with between playing the same two chapters of The Parish again and again.
I won’t be able to see if this breaks the demo, steam, or my computer until later tonight. So consider this my full endorsement of this modification. If anyone manages to break the demo, steam or a computer, please let me know before later tonight.
