Dante’s Inferno Tests Game Writers’ Wrath

by Bryan Sharp on October 28, 2009

I hope EA is putting half as much effort into the production of Dante’s Inferno as they are into the marketing of Dante’s Inferno. If you’re keeping score at home, we’ve reached the fifth circle of hell. The previous circles were marked with encouraged booth babe rape and checks for two hundred dollars. Now, if I was running the marketing for Dante’s Inferno, I would have sent the money first and then followed it up with encouragement to use that money in trade for sexual favors from booth babes. But maybe you have to go through the circles of hell in order like it’s some kind of skiing race.

Going by this video on Destructoid, the fifth circle of hell isn’t that bad. In fact, the fifth circle of hell JAMS.

I can’t talk enough about how much I enjoyed watching Nick Chester spend time with that box. I realize that that last sentence could be interpreted sexually. But if you pencil in chunks of time to spend with a female’s box, you’re doing it wrong.

For those who haven’t watched the video because that requires a penciled in chunk of time, I’ll sum it up. Basically, EA sent Destructoid a wooden box that played “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley as soon as the lid was raised. After this initial rick rolling, the box continued to play the song over and over and over again until Nick Chester smashed it with the included hammer.

There are so many great moments in the video:

The 00:36 second mark where Nick opens the box and thinks he’s about to get electrocuted.

The 1:53 mark where Nick doesn’t recognize the hammer and pair of goggles. My guess is that we’ll never see any DIY articles on the Destructoid website.

The 2:35 mark where Nick runs through the hallway carrying the box as it continues to play “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

And, my personal favorite, the 2:54 mark where, after the first couple of hits with the hammer, Nick thinks he stopped the music. But after a brief pause the music starts back up, immediately followed by a Nick’s frustrated sigh.

I wasn’t a big fan of the other bits of marketing for Dante’s Inferno, but this one does a great job of working in a funny scenario. I’m pretty surprised that we haven’t see more videos of boxes posted on other game blogs. I’m pretty sure Brian Crecente from Kotaku has all his EA stuff immediately sent to his outdoor incinerator, but other bloggers must have received boxes too.

I wonder if anyone just opened the box up and then threw it right in the trash. That would be a nice surprise for the trash person:

“WHERE ARE YOU RICK!?!?!  KEEP SINGING.”
